Late Developer

Patrick Nicholas studied photography and cinema in London graduating in 1977. His first job after University was as assistant editor for a the then unknown director Ridley Scott. He was sacked after three months for running the rushes of Alien upside down; shortly afterwards he decided that the film industry was not for him nor he for it. Footloose and fancy free he spent a year in Egypt working in advertising agency before chancing upon a job that took him to Italy for a week – he has been there ever since. He set up his own studio in Bologna as a fashion and advertising photographer in 1988. As a relief from purely commercial photography he embarked upon the series that later he was to call Belle – a series of tableaux mainly of nudes, inspired by painting, sculpture and occasionally music and cinema, using non professional models of all ages and types. He will use this blog to add information about the pictures too long to post on his website http://www.photonicholas.com
In 2007 he turned his back on commercial photography altogether to strike out into unknown territory by setting up his own photo gallery in the small jewel that is Orvieto. The Belle series draws to a certain extent on his experience in the film business as he likes to construct a set and takes great care over the selection of props and accessories. He also requests that his models bring personal possessions with them to the shoot and always involves them as much as possible in the pre-production stage. Besides images from the Belle project he exhibits landscapes mainly of Orvieto and the Tuscia (Umbria, Latium and Tuscany). Of late he has combined more and more landscape and figure in a uniquely Tuscan vision. He still has to create an image inspired by Alien – the cause of his downfall over thirty years ago.
Happier now than he’s ever been, his only regret is that he didn’t open his gallery years before.
Patrick runs Camera Etrusca, photo workshops for photographers of all levels from his base in Orvieto, Umbria. He also organises occasional masterclasses on Nude in the Landscape in which he divulges the experience he has gained in over twenty years of shooting the Belle combining it with landscape photography in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, Tuscany and Umbria.
